Brewing news Canada: Molson breaks ground on new Moncton brewery

Canada President and CEO Kevin Boyce, along with New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord and Mayor Lorne Mitton, broke ground on August 16 on Molson's new Moncton brewery. The facility will provide Canada's leading brewer with a strong local connection and underscores Molson's commitment to growing in the Maritimes.

The ground-breaking ceremony coincided with the unveiling of the brewery plans, as well as a site sign that will mark its new home alongside the Trans- Canada Highway, just North of Moncton.

Land clearing on the Caledonia Industrial Estates plot began in late July, and is now completed. The construction of the new facility is currently on track to hit its target operational date of January 2007. The state of the art brewery will feature bottling and keg lines and have the flexibility to accommodate the possible installation of a canning line. Brewing capacity will be more than 6 million 12-packs annually or 250,000 hectolitres. Once fully operational, the facility will brew several of Molson's most popular core brands such as Molson Canadian and Coors Light for the regional market.

The arrival of Molson in New Brunswick is expected to create 40 jobs within three years of commencing operation, bringing the total number of Molson employees in the Atlantic region to approximately 160. Molson's presence in Moncton will also translate into exciting business opportunities for several local companies. Throughout this $35 million project, Molson will count on the expertise of several New Brunswick firms and consultants. Among them, Moncton-based Crandall Engineering will be responsible for site services, and engineering firm Neil & Gunter, based out of Fredericton, will do the detailed mechanical and electrical design of the new brewery.

"Moncton and the province of New Brunswick boast a real wealth of talent and expertise. Molson is committed to supporting its new community and is proud to partner with local businesses for this exciting project," said Kevin Boyce, Molson Canada's President and CEO.

New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord applauded Molson's decision to locate in New Brunswick. "Under Greater Opportunity: New Brunswick's Prosperity Plan, creating a competitive fiscal and business environment is paramount in order to create new and strategic investments in New Brunswick," said Premier Lord. "Today, our province is one of the most competitive jurisdictions in North America in terms of corporate taxes. Lower taxes encourage private sector job creation and economic growth and we are delighted that Molson has chosen Moncton as their location of choice for their Maritime operation."

The Moncton brewery will become Molson's seventh brewery in Canada. Molson currently operates breweries in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Creemore, Montreal and St. John's.

With roots dating back to 1786 and a time-honoured tradition of brewing quality beers, Molson Canada is proud to be the nation's preferred brewer. The company proudly offers the most popular brands in Canada with an award-winning brand portfolio which includes Molson Canadian, Coors Light, Molson Export, Molson Dry, Rickard's and A Marca Bavaria. Molson Canada also partners with other leading brewers to offer such global brands as Heineken, Corona, Miller Genuine Draft and Foster's Lager. Molson employs 3,100 Canadians, operates six breweries, including the boutique brewery Creemore, and invests in communities from coast-to-coast through its various charitable initiatives and sports and entertainment sponsorships. Molson Canada is part of the Molson Coors Brewing Company, the world's fifth largest brewer.
